A Walk to Chow at Camp Udairi, Kuwait
This is me today, rockin’ the new Neo-esque Ray-Bans. Matt has the Mr. Smith ones.
Tent livin’! This tent is currently home to two platoons from our company.
The walk to chow is a kilometer (.6 miles) and starts here as we step out of the tent.
Then we walk…
and walk…
and walk…
and walk…
and walk by the MWR (moral welfare recreation) area where the phones, computers, gym and theatre can be found…
stop to take a photo for the mom…
and walk by the tower whose purpose is beyond me (modern tower of Babel perhaps?)…
then we wait in the line for chow…
then we wash our dirty little sandwich clamps…
then we actually get the chow slung to us with a kind of haste reminiscent of New York City…
then we take a seat and wolf it all down.
On the way back we hit the fast food area where the coffee shop is
located…
and we order up coffee. In the bible this area was referred to as “the wilderness”, but today I can still manage to get a café latté. And Jesus wept.
“Justice”, Kirk’s newest tattoo. A second date will be put on the right side once our deployment ends.

If you look closely at the 6th picture above, I’m the guy standing next to you, congrats on the book. I’ll starting it up after I finish Robert Jordan’s new one, sorry geekness comes first. Peace and let me know if you make it out to the west coast, I’ll do a gathering of milbloggers in you honor.

I think the pictures are great. My husband is currently in Camp Udairi and he sends pictures back via E-mail but you can only get a small picture of what it is really like. But now I have a better perspective of what he does on a daily basis, somewhat of a routine. It some how brings me closer. Thank You and God Bless.

My bro-in-law just arrived a couple of days ago. Like Alicia said, gives us folks back home an inkling of what it’s like. Take care of yourself, and congrats on the book – I’ll be looking for it today.

Just picked up the book. Havent finished it yet though…..I was with the 115th M.P.co We hit Drum in Febuary 03. Seeing your picks brought back a lot of memories. Most were of freezing our asses off. (great place to train for desert warfare) We were with the 3rd ID and 3rd ACR on traveling thoughout Iraq. Your book should be required reading for all troops to show how its done and for leaders to see how things can get fucked up. I am in your indebted service for producing such quality. Never thought I could laugh at this shit, but you have the gift to put the world to rights in a most comical way. Thank You, your Grace

Thanks for the walk down amnesia lane. I remember those oatmeal cookies at the DFAC…there seemed to be a direct correlation
between the amount of raisins on those cookies
and the fly season. While home on my 2-week leave, I found myself, from force of habit, eating with one hand, while swatting at imaginary flys with the other. It often seemed
that the only respite from those Kuwaiti Birds
was to be found in those mild sand-ladden breezes.
The best part of that tour was to be found in the Freedom Bird ride back home.
To all my Brothers-in-Arms (gender neutral):
Be safe, watch out for each other, remember your training, and get yourselves back home.

Wow, a lot has changed since I was there. Of all of the places I had been, being there was by far one of the best. Sure there ain’t much there but it better then being stuck on in garrison.

Oldest will be there first week of May, look for a very large Seabee bitching about everything from the sand to the color of their T-shirts! He doesn’t do hot well, this should be a real interesting 6 months. Oh, and make friends with him, I make killer cookies, and plenty will be on their way soon.

Just found this doing a search for Udairi. Thank you to all you brave soldiers who are protecting our freedoms here at home, YOU ARE ALL HEROES TO US. We will continue the fight at home in your absence and honor those heroes returning home. Remember the company you are in: in all of history only two souls have offered to defend us with his life: the US SOLDIER,,, and GOD.
Thank you for your service

Man, do those pictures bring back a flood of memories. I remember the walk from the airfield to the chow hall well. I wonder if they still serve those awful, spicey, bratwurst like things for breakfast? I can’t believe I actually find myself feeling nostalgic about my time there. Thanks for the picures.

Camp Buehring (formerly known as Udairi) has grown tremendsously since these photos. It’s great to see how far it has come and how much more accomodating it is now for our soldiers. I am currently stationed here as the Education Counselor. On behalf of the current Udairi residents, thanks for all you have done.

I stumbled across your site while researching Udairi. Daniel is on his way. This is his second tour. The first tour was on the USS Fletcher. This tour he’ll be flying the H-60. Wave if you see him: http://bille.us/pictures/060530/018.html
